On March 13, 2020 my husband, our two young kids and I left the City for a three day weekend in the Country on the land where I grew up. Little did we know that it would become our refuge during a global pandemic and an opportunity to reconnect with the land and each other.

I had forgotten how many stories the land has to tell, and how dramatic they are.  This blog will give me a platform to capture some of the excitement from reclaiming a greenhouse overgrown by bamboo to watching birds fledge to close encounters with snakes and cooking meals on the campfire.

A family of four black vultures is the impetus for this blog. For several years a pair of black vultures has used the abandoned greenhouse as a spot to raise two baby vultures each year and this year their pattern is the same. However, this year they have to put up with humans who are trying to reclaim the greenhouse from tenacious bamboo.

Mommy and Daddy vulture often sit atop a post and watch us work, and inside the greenhouse under a sink two awkward babies are growing up. For a moment I contemplated naming them, and The Jungle Book's animation made me think of calling the Daddy John, the Mommy Georgina and the young ones Paul and Ringo, but after I talked with my dad I came to my senses. While it would be fun to name them it wouldn't be in keeping with The Property. You see, at The Property creative names are shunned. We have The Lake, The Barn, The Tin Barn, The White House, The Green House, The Bass Pond, The Island....you get the pictures. So now we have, "The Vultures."
